How an Aquarium Can Benefit Your Health!
– Sun, Jun 23, 2019 at 09:16:05 AM
Do you ever notice a calm or relaxed feeling when you're around an aquarium? Maybe the sound of the bubbling water takes you to a tranquil place or helps remove the stressful thoughts from your mind. An aquarium can benefit your health in more ways than one.
A study completed by Plymouth University shows that people who spend a considerable amount of time around aquariums see an improvement in their physical and mental wellbeing. Apart from boosting people's moods, an aquarium can reduce blood pressure, heart rates, and other conditions.
Reduces Stress
Extensive competition and modern day living have led to the rise of daily stress. This stress eventually leads to emotional and physical disorders in your body. As much as stress is unavoidable, you can keep it to a minimum or at healthy levels.
A good way to do this would be to introduce an aquarium in your living room. As you watch fish make their slow and rapid movements in the water, you immediately experience a relaxing effect, which helps to soothe the mind.
Their movement is also hypnotic. This is significant in that it puts your mind at ease and helps you forget your daily troubles. If you have been suffering from stress and similar conditions, then you should invest in a nano aquarium and enjoy the benefits.
Reduces Pain
This is one main benefit of aquariums which is not known by many individuals. Fish help reduce body pain. Maybe you're wondering why most doctor's chambers and dental clinics have an aquarium.
Apart from making the place look beautiful and attractive; most patients have reported reduced pain after looking at the aquarium just for a few minutes.
Plymouth University also found that if you have an infant suffering from separation anxiety, or even extensive colic pain, a fish aquarium will play a very big role in reducing these problems. This could mean a few more hours of shut-eye for you!
Provides a Good Sleep at Night
A fish tank can induce a relaxing effect on the entire body, which is especially true in babies. It allows them to sleep better at night. It is common knowledge that getting sufficient and quality sleep at night allows an adult, or even children, to wake up feeling fresh.
This translates to more productivity during the day as well as fast turnaround time for work. Additionally, if you get good quality sleep, your body can repair damaged tissues while rejuvenating the cells ready for the following day.
However, those aquariums with live and beautiful fish get better results. If the costs of putting up an aquarium are not within your reach, you can also watch videos of swimming fish and still enjoy the relaxing benefits.
Increases Your Productivity
Even if you do not have a lot of space in your office or workplace, you can still have a small aquarium. You can consider getting a betta fish! Betta fish are easy to care for and have pretty colors you can enjoy. Ensure that you select a suitable place for your aquarium that has a clear line of sight to all office members.
This will give people an opportunity to stand and watch for several minutes a day. People in offices with aquariums have increased productivity compared to those that don't have a couple extra buddies at their desk.
Helps Alzheimer's Patients
Older people suffering from this condition can greatly benefit from having an aquarium in the house. Studies indicate that people suffering from Alzheimer's will eat more and require fewer supplements if they spend a considerable amount around an aquarium. Such people will have minimal aggressive behavior thanks to the relaxing effect of aquariums.
Maintaining and managing a small fish aquarium at home is easy. Give it proper care and attention, and your fish will be healthier. Makes sure to keep the tank clean, so you have a clear view of the fish as they swim, and the fish will also be happier. This will allow you to fully benefit from the therapeutic and health benefits of having an aquarium at home.

Is Soil Still The Best Medium For Plant Growth?
– Thu, Apr 25, 2019 at 12:53:26 PM
For as long as humanity could remember, soil has been the medium for agriculture, gardening or for any plant-related activities. This was before the technological revolution, but how can we still say that soil is the most ideal medium for plant growth?
So here's a summary of factors that makes it challenging for plant growth using soil for growing plants:
1. Water Drainage
The soil is exposed to many sediments and particles as it is exposed in the open. You might have a good quality of soil used for the initial stages of planting, which have the ideal water drainage system within the soil. However, over time, with the accumulation of sand and clay particles carried by wind, the water drainage system is affected. Poor water drainage system may result in:
Your plants wilting
Slow growth
Unhealthy plants (Leaves turn yellow and fall)
Soil is constantly damp
As a result, roots become spongy and rot
Water drainage within the soil is difficult to remedy and takes time to fix, which eventually lead to the same problem as mentioned above again.
2. pH Levels
This is probably one of the toughest factors to control since your soil is exposed to the elements of the outdoors almost every single day. Areas with massive air pollutions tend to have acidic rain and areas with dry environment will naturally result in an alkaline soil. Therefore, the pH levels of the soil must be tended too frequently, which is definitely a hassle and not easy for beginners to start planting.
You still have to incur additional costs on top of your hobby (planting) to get the recommended pH agents to maintain the pH of your soil.
3. Organic Matter
Who likes to incur costs and purchase soil time and time again? Overtime, when we reuse the soil that we initially used to grow other plants, the "life" of the soil is depleted. The lack of soil life, poor water drainage, and failing crops are symptoms that you must quickly identify with an overall lack of organic matter. You will have to quickly find composts to remedy this situation or else your plants will wilt, which is not something you desire after putting all that sweat and time into growing those beautiful plants of yours.
4. Minerals
Good horticulture soil contains ideally 50% solid material and 50% pore space. Most soils are dominated by mineral particles while others, organic matter. In order to achieve the ideal conditions for optimal plant growth, it requires lots of monitoring and experimentations to ensure this equilibrium between the minerals and materials within the soil. Beginners will definitely find this a challenge! A healthy soil does not come overnight and is only possible when lots of commitment and time is invested into ensuring the ideal conditions for plant growth.
After considering these multitudes of factors, is soil actually still the best way for planting? Or with technological advances, there are more innovative and effective ways of planting? Everyone wants a green space in their residences because it is known for its health effects and you do not want to commit so much of your time to maintain the green space, so how do you own a piece of nature then?

Fighting Depression with Plants

More than Food and Decor: How Plants Can Ease Depression
People typically grow plants in their homes and gardens for aesthetic reasons. The vibrant colors of plants (especially the flowering kinds) offer a great accent in any place. Growing plants for food is also becoming a trend nowadays, especially among households living in urban areas who want to avoid pesticide-laden greens and save up on food expenditures.
Apart from these two reasons, plants are also good companions for people suffering from depression. According to studies, having plants at home helps lower the systolic blood pressure and lifts the mood. These, aside from many other benefits like filtering the air and increasing energy and attentiveness.
Depression a major problem
Unfortunately, more and more people experience depression, and according to the World Health Organization, over 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. It is also reported that the condition is the leading cause of disability worldwide as well as a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.
It is more than just feeling sad, depression can linger longer, with the person feel dejected and unmotivated leading to more problems like sleeping and eating disorders.
This could be rooted to various reasons such as too much use of technology, pressure, and stress, and even the seasonal change to winter. For instance, during the winter, when sunlight is scarce and everything is gray and cold, more people experience the Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Plants to the Rescue!
While it is important for people to look deeper into their core to fight off depression and blues, plants can be an instant remedy to improve one's mood. Just by having plants in your bedroom, office desk, or anywhere you opt, there is an immediate and positive effect in your surroundings. Their vibrant presence has psychological effects wherein studies say that having plants in one's home during winter has reduced sick days of employees.
The next question, however, is what plants to get? There are tons of plants available and one can be confused in choosing the one or the bunch to accompany you. When considering ornamental plants, you might want to get the ones that attract you, such as the shapes and colors of the leaves and flowers.
Knowing their other benefits is also good in making a decision on what plant to get. For instance, ferns are good in filtering pollutants and improving humidity in the air. Lavender, on the other hand, offers violet accent as well as a calming scent in your household.
Eating the Blues Away
Aside from having the sight of plants to help ease your mood, you can also choose to grow veggies or fruits which you can later eat. And some plants are not just a good sight for people experiencing the blues but are dense in depression-busting nutrients.
Cherry tomatoes, for instance, do not just grow beautiful fruits, but the phytonutrient lycopene found in its skin is known to blocks build-up of inflammatory compounds connected to depression.
The herb oregano, on the other hand, is rich in anti-depression components and helps boost serotonin - a chemical relating to happiness. You can add oregano in salads and pastas, or boil to make tea.
Now, Make Your Plants Happy Too!
One can really get a lot of benefits from plants, but these beings need your love and care too, for them to thrive and continuously uplift you. When looking for plants, it is important to know how you should care for them. Some plants may need to be watered every day, while others bloom well even if you just water once a month such as the Sword Plant.
Anthuriums need a decent amount of light, as well as chamomile which prefers a huge amount of sunlight. Peace Lily, which produces a big, bright white flower is easy to care for even during cold weather.

How To Clone A Plant For Your EcoQube
– Tue, Mar 26, 2019 at 01:09:51 AM
Hey EcoQube backers!
Ok, propagate, not a clone, but it's pretty close! To propagate a plant means to multiply the plant, to create two or more plants from one original. And as each plant would be genetically identical, it's pretty similar to cloning.
GREEN ONION
This is the easiest plant to regrow!
Image from lifehacker.com
Save the bulbs and put them in water. After using the leaves in your favorite dish, simply place the bulbs in water and wait for the roots to regrow.
Once the roots have regrown, simply cut a slit in your plant medium and slide the green onion in. Thoroughly wet the medium, then return it to the net pot. Alternatively, you can skip the plant medium if preferred and slide the green onion straight into the black net pot.
Chill. Watch as your green onion grows new leaves!
MINT & BASIL
In the case of mint and basil, these herbs can be propagated through their clippings. This can be done quite simply and without too much effort if you follow these simple steps.
For green onion (highly recommended!), you simply need to use the bulb. That's the bottom white part of the stalk!
MINT, BASIL, AND OTHER LEAFY HERBS
Clip the stalk of your herb. The key to this step is to make sure each of these two new stalks has at least one set of two leaves, enough for each new plant to collect enough light to grow. We recommend making the cut about two to four leaf nodes (the part on the stalk where a set of two leaves grow from) down from the top of the plant. This tends to be 2 to 4 inches (5 - 10 cm). Make the cut just above the third or fourth leaf node down.
Prune the bottom leaves of the new stalk. While the leaves of a plant take in energy for the plant to use, the plant must also expend energy to grow them and keep them alive. The rootless stalk of your newly created basil or mint plant will only be able to take in enough water to support the top two leaves, so it's best for the new plant to remove the lower leaves until only to top two remains.
Place the stalk of the new plant in water. Your new plant will need to grow some roots, and you can help it by placing it in a small cup filled with water. Make sure that you do not submerge the plant completely, the leaves will still need to collect sunlight and carbon dioxide to let the plant grow. If your plant does not stand up nice and straight in your jar, use a small office tool like a rubber band or a binder clip to hold it in place. I bent a paperclip to keep my basil plant in place.
Slide the clipping into your plant medium: Using a pair of really sharp scissors or a knife, make a slit along the side of your white plant medium. Slide your herb clipping in the slit, making sure that the bottom of the stem remains inside the plant medium. Thoroughly soak your medium, then place it back into the net pot.
Chill. Nothing to do for it now but sit back and wait for your herb clone to grow some roots of its own. This might take anywhere from a few days to two weeks. You'll notice over the course of these weeks that small roots will emerge from the bottom of the stalk, as the plant clone reaches out to establish a better water supply.
